Bookshelf

Over the course of my genealogy pursuits, I’ve found plenty of books online, in book stores and in libraries that were helpful and plenty of others that weren’t.

Some I’ve read front to back, others I’ve barely dug into, and still others I’ve referenced repeatedly while researching my family’s history. They are among some of the best genealogy and history books related to my areas of interest that I’ve come across so far–many of which I’ve added to my own personal library.

After reading this post, I invite you to click on the links below to discover my personal favorites in each of the following categories:

Irish History

Immigration & Naturalization

American History & Social History

Civil War History

Chicago History

Reference Guides & “How To” Guides

Just for Fun

Once you find a category, click on a book title and a link will take you directly to a description of that book with details on the content, author, publisher, and reviews.

In addition, here are a few links to posts on this GeneaJourneys blog which I wrote when I was building my personal genealogy library. I hope you’ll find lots of good tips in those posts to help you build up your book collection, too:

What’s on Your Bookshelf?

Shopping for those Bookshelf Basics

History Books & Locality Guides

Have a comment on any of the books listed or have another recommendation you’d like to share?  Let me know via the “Contact” tab at the top of this page or via the form below. I’d love to hear your opinions. I’ll also check out your suggestions and consider adding them to my list of favorites here. Eventually, I’ll be  writing reviews of some of my top choices in each category and post them  on this  blog.

Happy browsing!
