Twenty-two years ago, in the final days of 1990, I penned this memoir of the previous year for the local Westmont Progress community newspaper. At the time I wondered when my almost two year old would give up her bottle; when my soon-to-be 3 year old would give up her diapers; and whether or not my nephew would actually have to fight in a new war in Saudia Arabia.
Today that 2 year old is on her way to becoming a nurse; the 3 year old works in Washington, D.C. for a child advocacy organization; and that nephew, who served in and survived that war in Saudi Arabia, is now a retired Marine enjoying the family life he so richly deserves.
I wonder what their lives and mine–and all of ours, actually–will be like in another 22 years…
